American VI: Ain't No Grave is an album by Johnny Cash released posthumously on February 23, 2010 on American Recordings and Lost Highway Records. Its release was three days prior to the 78th anniversary of Cash's birth. The album's music was recorded during the same sessions as American V: A Hundred Highways (2006) which took place during the final months of Cash's life. The album debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 54,000 copies in its first week.

Ain't no grave Can hold my body down There ain't no grave Can hold my body down. Well, look down yonder, Gabriel Put your feet on the land and sea But Gabriel, don't you blow your trumpet Until you hear from me. There ain't no grave Can hold my body down Ain't no grave Can hold my body down. Well meet me, Jesus, meet me Meet me in the middle of the air And if these wings don't fail me I will meet you anywhere. Ain't no grave Can hold my body down There ain't no grave Can hold my body down. This song is from Cash’s last album, American Recordings VI. This album was released seven years after his death. The album, but specifically this song gives the feeling of Cash singing from the grave. Through the use of his lyrics and the chains in the music, the song has a haunting feel.

Containing a collection of his final recordings, American VI: Ain't No Grave features one Johnny Cash original plus nine Cash-ified cover versions. Includes the Avett Brothers appearing on the title track plus musical assistance from Mike Campbell, Smokey Hormel, Matt Sweeney, Benmont Tench, Jonny Polosky and others. The haunting traditional title track is given the royal Cash treatment replete with graveyard chains and stomps like a corpse rising from the crypt coming to take back what is rightfully his.

Ain't No Grave is an elegiac and deeply spiritual album, a formal goodbye without regret from a man and an artist of almost mythic stature. The song selection is rooted in the Americana, folk, country, and gospel traditions. There is an excellent reading of Tom Paxton's Wonder Where I’m Bound that doesn’t feel as lost as the original, but more a statement after reflecting on a life fully lived.
