Each riff is incisively written and instantly memorable from the start; the main one of "The Antichrist", "Die by the Sword" and its savage middle break, the brilliantly dark and vicious "Black Magic" (the song that most resembles later Slayer musically), or the pounding title track, Slayer pretty much completely excel throughout. Less commercial than Bride's later works, the album, which was somewhat more extreme and darker than many contemporary Christian releases, received a mixed reception and did not sell particularly well.

No Mercy released their debut album, My Promise on October 21, 1996. which was the original title chosen by trio’s German record company, Hansa, BMG. The album was released in the . only a week later under the self title No Mercy on October 29, 1996. The album, however, was released in most areas of the world with its original title My Promise, including Australia where it received two times platinum. No Mercy’s second album, More, which was released in Germany on October 12, 1998, included singles such as Hello How Are You, More than a Feeling (originally recorded by Boston) and Tu Amor (originally by Jon . and later covered also by RBD). Although More wasn’t as successful as its predecessor, it still managed to achieve success in the GSA region (Germany, Switzerland, Austria), peaking at N., N. respectively.

Released at the forefront of the early-'80s thrash movement, Show No Mercy proved to be only a small step toward Slayer's domination of the extreme metal scene, basically amounting to a cleaned-up version of black metal stalwarts Venom
