Barnett's debut album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, was released in 2015 to widespread acclaim. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2015 she won four awards from eight nominations In 2017, she released Lotta Sea Lice, a collaborative album with Kurt Vile. In August 2013, Marathon Artists released The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas, a combined package of Barnett's first EP and her second EP, How to Carve a Carrot Into a Rose. The Double EP brought Barnett international critical acclaim, with "Avant Gardener", the lead single, named Track of the Day by Q Magazine and Best New Track by Pitchfork.
Courtney Barnett makes jangly, rumpled indie-rock in the vein of Pavement or early Dylan: Wordy, wry, and anchored by the kind of poetic clarity you can only get from looking at the world askew. Peas collects EPs released in 2012 and 2013 - an informal introduction to an artist who probably has more to offer. Its music tends to be simple, its narratives more surreal: On the highly quotable Avant Gardener, an attempt to conquer a lazy day by planting a few seeds devolves into a panic attack, complete with ambulance. The paramedic thinks I’m clever ’cause I play guitar, Barnett deadpans
A Sea of Split Peas is good. Can't speak for anyone else but she kind of reminds me of early Liz Phair. My husband found Courtney Barnett a few months ago on an internet radio. My wonderful husband doesn't always have the best taste in music so I resisted his efforts to listen to this album for several weeks. Holy crap, I feel bad that I didn't listen earlier. This album is wise beyond it's years, the lyrics are interesting, funny and heartfelt. The music is simple with lots of depth and very strong. It is the perfect anti-folk, indie type of album.
This week, in this space, I expected to be writing about Big Wheel And Others, the sprawling new double-album from Cass McCombs, one of the greatest songwriters currently existing in the indie rock universe. And Big Wheel And Others is, in a lot of ways, a very good album. In a lot of ways - and some of the same ones - it’s also a bit of a mess.

I much prefer the mundane claims Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett, and that’s clear to be heard on ‘The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas’. But it’s the way she so effortlessly turns the mundane into witty, thoughtful & descriptive narratives that beguiles here. Her nonchalant voice adds to the slacker vibe, with the relatively simple background music combining indie, folk, psych, garage & even alt-country.
The first album from Australian singer/songwriter Courtney Barnett isn't a traditional full-length. Sea of Split Peas is in fact two EPs tied together to create a full body of work, and it's a testament to her talented songwriting that the track list flows almost seamlessly from her breakthrough 2013 EP How to Carve a Carrot Into a Rose into her 2012 release, I've Got a Friend Called Emily Ferris. Barnett's greatest asset is her down-to-earth lyrical simplicity, which transforms what would otherwise be a mundane day or story into a tale of intrigue and significance.
Welcome to the world of Courtney Barnett, a hot, hazy place where 'suburban banalities' and 'mindless procrastination' have never sounded so compelling. Along with 'Avant Gardener', selected highlights from the album include the gorgeous and woozy piano-strewn opener 'Out of the Woodwork', which showcases a darker side of her writing.
