Shiny and Oh So Bright Vol. 1, LP: No Past. No Sun. (stylized in all caps) is the tenth studio album by the American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins. The album was released on November 16, 2018 through Napalm Records. In early February 2018 it was announced that original members Jimmy Chamberlin and James Iha had rejoined the band, marking the first time since Machina II/The Friends and Enemies of Modern Music in 2000 that Iha has worked with the band.

The legends of ’90s alt-rock have reunited only to bring this puzzling, indecisive husk of an album into the world. In the annals of ’90s bands that have reunited to thrust a new album into the void where inspiration used to be: Shiny might contain the least imagination, the least personality, the least effort, the least love. There is nothing firm to hold onto in any of the album’s mid-tempo rock songs- See love, see time/See death, see life/See tears, See bright/See day from night, Corgan drones on Travels. Corgan asks on Alienation, a query about as meaningful as Are we human or are we dancer? and six-thousand times less memorable. The final two songs perk up, slightly, perhaps because they sense the end is near. Corgan reaches for higher notes on the chorus melody of With Sympathy, giving a little push to the song’s sagging frame.

Album highlight Solara sounds like a grunge makeover of the Cars’ Just What I Needed ; closer Seek and You Shall Destroy rides a lean Helmet groove to a sunnier shores; and Marchin’ On is like Badmotorfinger-era Soundgarden with strings and some inspired guitar noise. Still, even parts of these songs feel like any member of the axis of Nineties second-tier alt-rock bands – Spacehog, Everclear, Silverchair, Ruth Ruth – had they hooked up with a monster drummer spilling sextuplets or bonkers tom-tom fills.
