This Is Hardcore is the sixth album by English band Pulp, first released in March 1998. It came three years after their breakthrough album, Different Class, and was eagerly anticipated. In 2013, NME ranked it at number 166 in its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. As with the band's previous album, Different Class, it reached No. 1 in the UK Albums Chart, and was well received critically, earning Pulp a third successive nomination for the 1998 Mercury Prize.

On This Is Hardcore, Pulp make it clear they have outgrown Britpop and belong right up there with Ray Davies and Costello and Morrissey, those who look at England with a satirist's eye and a balladeer's heart. If Cocker does have an eye on rock'n'roll posterity (and if he doesn't, why does the intro to "A Little Soul" pay homage to/rip off Smokey Robinson's "Tracks of My Tears"?), it might explain why the new album sounds slightly clunky in places. In many ways, the album is a telling pop counterblast to the archetypically rock mindsets of 'OK Computer' and 'Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space'. For where those two albums contemplate emotional extremities with solipsistic self-absorption, 'This Is Hardcore' looks at similarly troubling subject matter but always with a knowing look in its eyes and a sense of perspective.

This Is Hardcore ‎(CD, Album). Wonderful album and arguably Pulp's best. Discs are 120g which is disappointing and I find the sound crisp but lacking depth. It is not a bad pressing, but in my opinion it could have been better. The discs are free from noise at least but I wouldn't pay more than £20 for it.

Then Pulp threw the gauntlet of This Is Hardcore, an unsparing send-off and hangover for the day after the revolution-or was it all just a fashionable party? The group’s sixth album was immediately met with controversy. Its cover, by artists Peter Saville and John Currin, features an uncanny valley portrait of a Hollywood blonde, her nude torso bent over red satin sheets. Her elongated neck arcs unsettlingly towards her open mouth and detached eyes, the album’s hot pink title stamped obscenely across her skin

Cocker doesn't quite lose the plot on This Is Hardcore, but the ominous, claustrophobic "The Fear" makes it clear that this is a different band, one that no longer has anthems like "Common People" in mind. The shift in direction shouldn't come as a surprise - Pulp was always an arty band - but even the catchiest numbers are shrouded in darkness.

Pulp – This Is Hardcore. You are hardcore, you make me hard You name the drama and I'll play the part It seems I saw you in some teenage wet dream I like your get-up, if you know what I mean. I want it bad I want it now Oh, can't you see I'm ready now? I've seen all the pictures, I've studied them forever.

You are hardcore, you make me hard. You name the drama and I'll play the part. It seems I saw you in some teenage wet dream. I like your get up if you know what I mean. Oh, what a hell of a show but what I want to know: what exactly do you do for an encore? 'Cos this is Hardcore.
