Ol' Blue Eyes Is Back is a 1973 album by the American singer Frank Sinatra. Sinatra returned from his brief retirement with the appropriately titled Ol’ Blue Eyes Is Back. Released amidst a whirlwind of publicity, the album was a commercial success, earning gold status and peaking just outside the top-ten on the UK and Billboard album charts. The album was accompanied by a television special, Magnavox Presents Frank Sinatra, which reunited Sinatra with Gene Kelly.

Released amidst a whirlwind of publicity, the album was a commercial success, earning gold status and nearly climbing its way into the Top Ten, but it wasn't a return to form. Produced by Don Costa, the album doesn't follow the sound of Sinatra's last handful of albums (Sinatra & Company, Watertown, A Man Alone, My Way), jettisoning then-recent pop hits for selections by upcoming songwriters, particularly Joe Raposo, as well as several current film and Broadway numbers. Much of the material is unmemorable, featuring slight melodies and clichéd, underdeveloped lyrics.

The album is supposed to showcase the talents of Sinatra’s new fave writer, Joe Raposo of Sesame Street, who composed four of its nine songs. There is no way of evaluating them since they are taken at a snail’s pace and bellowed with a patriarchal grandiosity that is grotesque. Don Costa’s slushy production only makes matters worse.

I also have a promo copy with the sticker on the front cover and label with "PROMOTION NOT FOR SALE" and a 1974 copyright date, but with F 2195 as the catalog number. It's labeled as stereo, but without the usual Reprise "FS" prefix of the period for stereo. Runout on Side I has / F-2195-31755-1, Side II has F-2195-31756-1.
