Bachata is a genre of Latin American music that originated in the Dominican Republic in the first half of the 20th century with Indigenous, African and European musical elements. The first recorded compositions of Bachata were done by Jose Manuel Calderon from the Dominican Republic. Bachata originates from Bolero and Son (and later, from the mid 1980s, Merengue).

The traditional folk music of the Dominican Republic, Merengue (or Bachata) in its classic form is played on accordion, saxophone, box bass, guayo (a metal scraper), and two-ended tambora drum. Today, the music is more familiar in its big band form, a dance music close to salsa; though now dominated by saxophone, the rhythms remain unchanged, with a simple and monotonous 1-2-3-4 beat.
