4 Nights of 40 Years is an attempt to present Robert Cray’s career in a fan friendly, three disc package. The first disc is billed as the Main Feature. Recorded last December at several . rehearsal halls and venues, Cray’s current line up of bassist Richard Cousins, drummer Les Falconer and keyboardist Dover Weinberg are augmented by saxophonist Trevor Lawrence and trumpeter Steve Madio of Paul Butterfiedl and Stevie Wonder fame. Producer Steve Jordan adds percussion to give the band a full R&B flavor with extra bottom. Disc 2 is the bonus disc and includes performances from the Dutch television show Countdown from 1987, and the Robert Cray Band’s set at the 1982 San Francisco Blues Festival. The band was touring behind the Strong Persuader release and this show contains music from that period.

The first CD contains new live recordings from four nights recorded at four venues in the Los Angeles area. On the bonus CD we included some vintage Robert Cray live recordings from 1982 and 1987. The Blu-ray contains 90 minutes of concert footage from multiple camera angles creating an incredible perspective. It also contains personal in-depth interviews with Robert Cray, his band members and testimonials from legends as Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Keith Richards, Jimmie Vaughan and Bonnie Raitt.

Only two covers this time with a set of uniformly great originals, and Salgado was gone so Cray sang them all. "We didn't have any money," says Bromberg, who co-produced with Dennis Walker. Their road manager had some money, and he loaned us money to do the first sessions.

When Robert chose two Tony Joe White songs for the album, White, a big fan of Cray, came up from Nashville to sit in. First up is the moving ballad Aspen, Colorado (the sister song of his Rainy Night in Georgia ). The other end of the spectrum is the swirling psychedelia of Don’t Steal My Love. Wright and Hi Rhythm is the horn-driven version of You Must Believe in Yourself. Jordan, who subsequently produced the Cray Band’s In My Soul, Shoulda Been Home and the first CD in 4 Nights of 40 Years Live, also brought the personification of Memphis soul to the recording session, Willie Mitchell, to help with arrangements for the Memphis Horns. Mitchell discovered and first recorded Al Green along with other Southern Soul singers like Ann Peebles, . Wright and Syl Johnson for the famed Memphis label Hi Records.
