The Symphony in D minor is the most famous orchestral work and the only mature symphony written by the 19th-century naturalised French composer César Franck. After two years of work, the symphony was completed 22 August 1888. It was premiered at the Paris Conservatory on 17 February 1889 under the direction of Jules Garcin. Franck dedicated it to his pupil Henri Duparc.

Franck: Symphony in D Minor - Symphonic Variations for Piano & Orchestra. Wiener Philharmoniker. Several years ago, I picked up an album entitled The Great Moments in Music: The Symphony, that included César Franck's mystical Symphony in D. The other symphonies were Beethoven’s Third and Fifth, Brahm’s brilliant First, Dvorak’s Ninth ( The New World ), Schubert’s Eighth ( Unfinished ), and Tchaikovsky’s hyper-romantic Fourth and Fifth. Among this exalted group, his Symphony in D was the only one conceived in three movements, rather than the usual four which was the norm. Born in the 19th century, Franck was a man of his age, which is to say he fits comfortably among the great romantic composers-Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, and Wagner.
