It is a dynamic ensemble of 32 regular players, it performs with conductors and soloists of the highest international calibre. The broad, highly-acclaimed repertoire and the first-rate concerts, performed with a burning passion for music have won the Kymi Sinfonietta a devoted following. The orchestra’s first Artistic Director, Juha Nikkola, quickly succeeded in welding the players in the Kymi Sinfonietta into a homogeneous unit. As Principal Guest Conductor (2004-2006) Dima Slobodeniouk added new features to the orchestra’s repertoire. It released its first, disc Klami Rhapsodie on the Alba label in 2002. One of the items on this disc was the world premiere recording of Finnish composer’s Uuno Klami’s incidental music to the play The Prodigal Son.

KUULA: South Obstrobothnian Folk Songs II. Jorma Hynninen, baritone; Kymi Sinfonietta/Juha Nikkola, cond. Despite the jacket cover, nothing is called Rhapsodie, with the Symphonie enfantine (Lapsisinfonia) a misshapen oddity indeed. However, the veteran baritone Jorma Hynninen sings two Madrigals and a Serenade (from incidental music to a Dalmatian comedy called The Prodigal Son) in a voice darkened by the years but ever-steady and passionately musical. The orchestral Spring by Eero Kesti (the Kymi Sinfonietta’s principal violist) has no characteristics one can recall even minutes after hearing it-purely a parochial inclusion.
