Lyrics: If you want a boxer I will step into the ring for you And if you want a doctor I'll examine every inch of you If you want a driver, climb inside Or if you want to take me for a ride You know you can I'm your man" (C) 2014. Sony Music Entertainment.

I'm Your Man is the eighth studio album by Leonard Cohen, released in 1988. The album marked Cohen's further move to a more modern sound, with many songs having a synth-oriented production. I'm Your Man was recorded in Los Angeles and Montreal and employed four producers: Roscoe Beck, Jean-Michel Reusser, Michel Robidoux, and Cohen himself.

I'm the Man is Joe Jackson's second album, released in October 1979. Taken from the album, "It's Different for Girls", was his biggest UK chart single, peaking at number five in the UK Singles Chart. I'm the Man was re-released in 2001 with one bonus track, a live version of "Come On". "Come On" was originally released as the b-side to Jackson's single "I'm the Man", also issued in October 1979.

It’s good to get into the rhythm of other people’s lyrics when you’re writing. I’ve also been thinking about I’m Your Man lately, and how i’m gonna steal a lot of those cheesy production techniques for my next record. I’m also a painfully slow writer, as was Leonard. Bill Pritchard, covered the title track to I’m Your Man on the 1991 tribute album I’m Your Fan. When I was at school in the mid to late seventies a lot of people thought I was weird listening to The Songs of Leonard Cohen album, but it was always about the songs and the great lyrics for me. Then a lo-fi sound with almost cheesy synths came along, still with great songs and great lyrics the album I’m Your Man. The simple synthetic backing for me just accentuates the true earthy lyrics and great tunes. I also found it very funny!

In Sylvie Simmons’ Cohen biography, also called I’m Your Man, Black Francis says: Everything that’s sexy about him was extra sexy, anything funny about him extra funny, anything heavy was extra heavy. Triple-espresso Cohen. Six of these eight songs were career highlights that featured on The Essential Leonard Cohen and his 2008 comeback tour. Over the years, they have been consistently covered and quoted and folded into popular culture. I’m Your Man gives the impression that Cohen took this responsibility very seriously. It’s not an uplifting album, but it’s a strangely reassuring one, because you feel that Cohen is working like a dog on the listener’s behalf to make the intolerable tolerable. Leonard is picking up the stones.

A stunningly sophisticated leap into modern musical textures, I'm Your Man re-establishes Leonard Cohen's mastery. Against a backdrop of keyboards and propulsive rhythms, Cohen surveys the global landscape with a precise, unflinching eye: the opening "First We Take Manhattan" is an ominous fantasy of commercial success bundled in crypto-fascist imagery, while the remarkable "Everybody Knows" is a cynical catalog of the land mines littering the surface of love in the age of AIDS.
