Last Train to Clarksville" was the debut single by The Monkees. It was released August 16, 1966, and later included on the group's 1966 self-titled album, which was released on October 10, 1966. The song, written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, was recorded at RCA Victor Studio B in Hollywood on July 25, 1966, and was already on the Boss Hit Bounds on August 17, 1966. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 on November 5, 1966. Lead vocals were performed by the Monkees' drummer Micky Dolenz.

The song "Last Train to Clarksville" was released as a single shortly before the release of the album and went to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was the only hit single from the album. I'll Be True to You" was previously released as a single by the Hollies in January 1965 under the title "Yes I Will". Famously, the Monkees were not permitted by their management to function as a working band for this album. Eight of the original LP's twelve tracks feature one lone Monkee singing lead vocal over instrumentation and backing vocals recorded entirely by a group of session musicians which varies from song to song.

Take the last train to Clarksville Now I must hang up the phone I can't hear you in this noisy railroad station all alone I'm feeling low Oh, no, no, no Oh, no, no, no. And I don't know if I'm ever coming home. BTW, post-Monkees, M. N. went on to record under the name, Michael Nesmith and the First National Band. He made an album or two, with a few mild hits, "Joanne," "(I Think I Will Fly Down to) Rio," and "Roll with the Ball. The album (or one of them) was titled, "From a Radio Engine to the Photon Wing. Didn't he also make a movie, or have another album title, that had "Parts" in the name?

Last Train to Clarksville", written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, is The Monkees' first single, first released on 16 August 1966 by Colgems Records as 66-1001 backed with "Take a Giant Step". The song was also featured on the band's debut album The Monkees. The single was the first record released by Colgems and featured a mono mix of the song; a stereo version first appeared on the stereo album. The single reached on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week starting 5 November 1966.

Last Train to Clarksville. Produced by Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart. verse} Take the last train to Clarksville And I'll meet you at the station You can be here by four thirty Cause I made your reservation Don't be slow Oh, no, no, no Oh, no, no, no. Cause I'm leaving in the morning And I must see you again We'll have one more night together Till the morning brings my train and I must go Oh no, no, no Oh no, no, no. And I don't know if I'm ever coming home

The supposedly authentic musicians who complained about the Monkees - like the Byrds, who clowned the Monkees on So You Wanna Be A Rock ‘N’ Roll Star even though they themselves hadn’t played on Mr. Tambourine Man - would’ve been lucky to come up with anything as resonant as Last Train To Clarksville.
