The Pretenders are an English-American rock band formed in Hereford, England, and Akron, Ohio, United States in March 1978. The original band consisted of initiator and main songwriter Chrissie Hynde (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), James Honeyman-Scott (lead guitar, backing vocals, keyboards), Pete Farndon (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Martin Chambers (drums, backing vocals, percussion).
Pretenders is the debut studio album by British-American band The Pretenders, released on 7 January 1980 under Real Records in the UK, and Sire Records in the United States. A combination of rock, punk and pop music, this album made the band famous. The album features the singles "Stop Your Sobbing", "Kid" and "Brass in Pocket". Nick Lowe produced the Pretenders' first single, "Stop Your Sobbing", but decided not to work with them again as he thought the band was "not going anywhere".

The Pretenders' second album, Pretenders II, was released in August 1981 to follow-up success, preceded by the EP "Extended Play" in the United States in recognition of the demand for their material. By June 1982 bassist Farndon was fired because of his drug abuse and, two days later, guitarist Honeyman-Scott died of a drug related heart attack; Farndon himself died in April 1983 as a result of drug abuse. In 1980, "Cuban Slide" (A-side) was released as a single in Japan, backed with "Stop Your Sobbing" as the B-side. In 1982 "I Go To Sleep" (A-side) was released in Belgium with "English Roses" (album track) as the B-side.
The Pretenders mixed punk and New Wave aggression with pop smarts on their debut, which was released on Jan. 19, 1980. And then there was "Brass in Pocket," the hit single that helped push the album into the Top 10. Pretenders was quickly certified gold and went platinum two years later. A year after their second album, 1981’s solid Pretenders II, Farndon was fired due to his drug use. Two days later, on June 16, 1982, Honeyman-Scott was found dead of a cocaine overdose. Hynde and Chambers, with replacements in tow, would rebound with Learning to Crawl, the only other Pretenders album as consistently brilliant as their debut. Top 100 Rock Albums of the '80s. If there had never been such a thing as Chrissie Hynde someone would certainly have needed to invent her: The Ohio born singer-songwriter and frontwoman of the Pretenders emerged from the teeming hothouse of late 1970’s London like Athena cracked forcefully from the skull of Zeus
Not only does the band know how to present a song, but the lyrics are insanely great. Hey, when I was 18, and the Pretenders first album came out, I thought it was the coolest album in the world, and I played it to death. Now, almost 30 years later, this collection is the Pretenders sound for me, a more mellow, older, wiser sound that suits Chrissie Hynde just fine. Chrissie's sound has matured into middle-age with grace and class, and the music here represents that more mature sound very well.
