This is the first of Donald Harrison's outings in his association with the Candid label and finds him paying tribute to the great innovative band leader. For Art's Sake is an album of '90s bebop at it's best - a music born of the hard drive, hard bop of the '50s and colored by the later experiments of men like Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. Watch out for the structured spontaneity of the leader's playing throughout, for the brassy,.

Altoist Donald Harrison, who is joined by trumpeter Marlon Jordan (19 at the time), pianist Cyrus Chestnut, bassist Christian McBride and drummer Carl Allen, starts off the live session with "So What" and the "Freddie Freeloader"-like blues "Nut" (which alternates between two different keys). However, the date takes a welcome turn to the left during a 17-minute version of "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise," which features an explorative Harrison solo, an explosive yet thoughtful improvisation from Jordan, and intense work by the rhythm section.

Donald Harrison Jr. (born June 23, 1960) is a jazz saxophonist from New Orleans, Louisiana. He is married to Mary Alicė Spears-Harrison and the father of Victoria Harrison. Two years later Harrison released a tribute album to Blakey. This was followed by an album that reached into Harrison's New Orleans heritage with guest appearances by Dr. John and Cyrus Chestnut and chants by the Guardians of the Flame Mardi Gras Indians. He devoted half the album Nouveau Swing (1997) to mixing the swing beat of modern acoustic jazz with modern dance music and half to mixing the swing beat with music His albu. 1991: For Art's Sake (Candid). 1992: Indian Blues (Candid) with Dr. John. 1994: The Power of Cool (CTI).
