I recently purchased this set of Friedrich Gulda's performances of the Beethoven piano sonatas and concertos and was astonished. I own Brendel's set (the one from the 1990's, though I have some discs from his 1960's set, too) and have listened to numerous interpretations of various sonatas by many pianists over the years-love Serkin's Apassionata, for instance.

Friedrich Gulda (16 May 1930 – 27 January 2000) was an Austrian pianist and composer who worked in both the classical and jazz fields. Born in Vienna as the son of a teacher, Gulda began learning to play the piano from Felix Pazofsky at the Wiener Volkskonservatorium, aged 7. In 1942, he entered the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied piano and musical theory under Bruno Seidlhofer and Joseph Marx. He won first prize at the Geneva International Music Competition in 1946. Piano Concertos N. 3 & N. 6 "Coronation" released: 1984.
