Round About Midnight. Given that 'Round About Midnight was Miles Davis' debut Columbia recording, it was both a beginning and an ending. Certainly the beginning of his recording career with the label that issued most if not all of his important recordings; and the recording debut of an exciting new band that had within its ranks Philly Joe Jones, Paul Chambers, pianist Red Garland, and an all but unknown tenor player named John Coltrane.

The song is sometimes incorrectly called "'Round About Midnight", as Miles Davis used this as the title of his 1957 Columbia Records album 'Round About Midnight that included a version based on Dizzy Gillespie's arrangement. It became a signature song for Davis; his performance of it with Monk at the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival, which was heard by producer George Avakian, was crucial in securing him a recording contract with Columbia Records.

Round About Midnight is one of Miles Davis' true masterpieces; it's an album of focused, passionate numbers that showcase a post-bop transformation that was taking place in the 1950's. Here, Miles is in top form with his signature trumpet, while John Coltrane adds the tenor sax. Throw in great piano by Red Garland, and what you have is relaxing, yet moving songs that remind me of lounge music at some hotel during happy hour.
