Its primary concert venues are the Philharmonie am Gasteig and the Herkulessaal in the Residenz. The orchestra was founded in 1949, with members of an earlier radio orchestra in Munich as the core personnel.

The Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks plays all the symphonies of Gustav Mahler in this collection with a total of 11 CDs. The conductors were Mariss Jansons and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Bernard Haitink, Daniel Harding and Sir Colin Davis. The performances were recorded live between 1996 and 2016 in the Philharmonie im Gasteig and the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residenz, and most of them are recent. Gustav Mahler: Symphony No 9. In December 2011, at the end of the Mahler-cycle of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Bernard Haitink conducted the orchestra in the Philharmonie Munich. Mahlers Symphony No 9 was on the programme. Rafael Kubelík was not only a first-class Mahler-interpreter, he also had a special relationship with Anton Bruckner's music.
