Pip Proud was born Phillip John Proud in Adelaide in September 1947 and is the younger brother of a portrait artist, Geoffrey Proud (born 1946)  . He was signed to the Phillips/Phonogram label and his first commercial album, Adreneline and Richard (1968), was released, which reprised most of the tracks from his earlier effort. Some tracks had a full band backing added without his involvement. Australian musicologist, Ian McFarlane, felt it, "contained such sparse, idiosyncratic and evocative songs as 'De Da De Dum', 'Purple Boy Gang', 'Into Elizabeth's Eyes', 'An Old Servant' and 'Adreneline and Richard'.

Adreneline & Richard 1968. Eagle-wise (22 Tracks from Australia's Greatest Pop Primitive 1968-69) 1968. Born in 1947 to a middle-class family in Hindmarsh, South Australia, Pip Proud abandoned an electrician's apprenticeship as a teenager and moved to Sydney to live with his older brother, Geoffrey, an up-and-coming painter. Self-described as "spastic," Proud had problems coordinating his hand movements, and as a therapeutic exercise he taught himself guitar. Soon after arriving in Sydney, he began composing his own songs and quickly won the patronage of Michael Hobbs, a Sydney stockbroker and friend of the elder Proud. With this financial support, Proud began recording his songs.

In the late ’60s, Pip Proud recorded two of the oddest records ever to come out of & Richard and A Bird in the Engine-before vanishing into obscurity for the better part of three decades. Often called the Australian Syd Barrett, Proud actually released his second album in 1969, a year prior to The Madcap Laughs, and developed his indigenous psychedelia in virtual isolation.
