At his own expense, he published two sets of short works for the viola da gamba called Musicall Humors, the first in 1605 and the second in 1607. He dedicated the second set to the Queen but when she declined to reply, it was back to the Baltic Wars for Hume. In this stunningly beautiful recording, Jordi Savall - the world's preeminent gamba virtuoso - vividly brings Hume to life

In all likelihood, Tobias Hume (about 1570 to 1645) is the greatest soldier/composer of all time. But although he fought first for the King and Queen, and later as a mercenary for the King of Sweden, and then for the Emperor of Russia, he seems to have been more of a rogue and a braggart than a soldier. He apparently ended his life half-mad, eating snails in an old soldiers home petitioning the King for permission to take command of the army and quell the Irish Rebellion. Whatever his qualities as a soldier, Hume was still a great composer, albeit a very limited and very, very eccentric great.
