1. Vivace ma non troppo. Vladimir Ashkenazy, Itzhak Perlman. 3. Allegro molto moderato. Violin Sonata No. 2 in A major, Op. 100. 4.

Itzhak Perlman about to play the National Anthem at Citi Field in New York City in 2016. Background information. Perlman first became interested in the violin after hearing a classical music performance on the radio. At the age of three, he was denied admission to the Shulamit Conservatory for being too small to hold a violin. He instead taught himself how to play the instrument using a toy fiddle until he was old enough to study with Rivka Goldgart at the Shulamit Conservatory and at the Academy of Music in Tel Aviv, where he gave his first. 1981: Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance: Tchaikovsky: Piano Trio in A Minor (w/ Lynn Harrell & Vladimir Ashkenazy). 1982: Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Soloist(s) Performance (with orchestra): Elgar: Violin Concerto in B Minor.

Itzhak Perlman and Vladimir Ashkenazy perform Brahms’ violin sonatas extremely well on this album. Perlman finesses his performances in the first movement of sonata his playing, along with Ashkenazy’s excellent accompaniment, brings the music into clear focus here. I would say that the sound quality is superb here, and the balance of sound between the violin and the piano is excellent. I have the same sonatas as performed by Nikolaj Znaider and Yefim Bronfman. Violinist Itzhak Perlman and pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy recorded these sonatas in 1983. Both performers are stellar in their own right, so the combination makes for some splendidly beautiful music. Perlman's silky violin playing is hard to beat; there is no harshness, even on the high notes. Ashkenazy is an excellent accompanist, holding back when the violin has the melodic line but providing powerful emphasis when called for.
