Daniel Ivan Hicks (December 9, 1941 – February 6, 2016) was an American singer-songwriter known for an idiosyncratic style that combined elements of cowboy folk, jazz, country, swing, bluegrass, pop, and gypsy music. He led Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks. He is perhaps best known for the songs "I Scare Myself" and "Canned Music.

Crazy For Christmas is classic Hot Licks, full of the same dry wit an. Of course, no Dan Hicks holiday album would be complete without a few irreverent parodies including "Christmas Mornin’" (done in the tune of Hicks’ hit "Where’s The Money") and "Santa Got A Choo-Choo" (a Hicks re-write and salute to "Choo Choo Ch’Boogie"). lt;em Crazy For Christmas

Hicks had formed the acoustic group Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks in 1968 as an opener for the Charlatans, but soon the new band became his primary project. After adding a pair of female backing vocalists - "the Lickettes" - the group issued its debut LP, Original Recordings, in 1969. In 2010 Hicks brought his jazzy, hip sense of humor to bear on the holiday season with Crazy for Christmas, released by Surfdog Records. Dan Hicks died on February 6, 2016 at his home in Mill Valley, California; he was 74 years old. ~ Jason Ankeny.

The Hot Licks' eccentric combination of folk, country, and old-timey parlor music with often Zappa-esque absurd humor still sounds fresh today, perhaps because it already sounded apart from its time 30 years ago. Hicks recorded two of these tracks for last year's excellent Beatin' the Heat comeback, but Original Recordings is the one that put him on the map. It's the one college kids listened to in dorm rooms while doing whatever throughout the first half of the 1970s. This album covers Dan Hicks and Licks very well. Great for anyone wanting a good representation of of that good ole swing sound that Dan perfected.

This 2003 package spotlights Dan Hicks (guitar/vocals) and his handpicked assemblage at a one-time-only gig at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco on December 9, 2001, honoring Hicks' 60th birthday. In his trademark approach, the pacing is decidedly low-key, even as different aggregates of musicians come and go between practically every number. This gives each delivery a unique texture and allows for some inspired interaction. Recommended for seasoned enthusiasts and the curious alike, there is much to enjoy and revisit on this outing.

Dan Hicks, who helped keep the traditions of rock's roots in country, bluegrass and swing alive with his band the Hot Licks, has died at the age of 74. He had been battling throat and liver cancer for two years. He was true blue, one of a kind, and did it all his own way always. To all who loved him, know that he will live forever in the words, songs, and art that he spent his life creating  . Several more albums followed in the next decade, including a Christmas album in 2010. His 70th birthday concert, which featured Jones, Van Dyke Parks, David Grisman and other friends, was released in 2013. See Other Rockers We've Lost in 2016.

Crazy for Christmas Crazy because he's always been pleasantly nuts, but also because he's crazy not just as a result of but about Christmas, which as all Christmas fans know is a combination with a shot at making the holiday as full of good cheer as it's supposed to be. Scatting "Here Comes Santa Claus" as one retro strategy among many, Hicks lays out an "Old Fashioned Christmas" complete with "Bethlehem scene on the lawn/And a picture of Rudolph in the john" as the elves in "Santa's Workshop" paint millions of wooden.
