Cheryl 12. Dancing Guy Mating Surfaces is the second full length from Portland, Oregon's Lithics. Twelve tightly wound fragments of brittle abstract twin guitar, impellent rhythm, and absurd, imagistic lyricism. A stern danceable sound that summons cut up snapshots of Su Tissue and Mark E Smith, an imagined landscape where Captain Beefheart hits that 99 Records Too Many Creeps beat.

Lithics. SOUNDS LIKE: Mutant disco made for actual mutants, played by the last humans left in the sewers after the coming Trumpocalypse.

For an album so repetitive it really does seem to have some surprising tricks up its sleeve throughout the effort. It’s constantly relaying the same musical schematics, yet Mating Surfaces never seems to be stuck in one place as every song twists and turns subtly, defying the usual architecture for such a genre. While there are tons of details to pick apart within an LP clocking in at just under 30 minutes, the scattered abstractions reveal a clueless mess that could be cleaned up just a touch.

The sound is composed of trebly, sharp guitars constantly piercing with uncomfortably angular riffs, a reliably funky and nimble bassist, and a drummer who would surely pass any limb endurance test with the constantly fast tempos on the record. It sometimes feels like their carefully structured songs are just a bunch of people playing random stuff simultaneously at the same blistering tempo. The most iconoclastic piece of the Lithics sound, however, is frontwoman Aubrey.
