Pecos Bill, as told by Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers, is the film's finale relating the tale of the famous hero from Texas; the greatest cowboy that ever lived, his horse Widowmaker, and how he was brought back down to earth by a woman named Slue-Foot Sue. This retelling of the story is courtesy of Roy Rogers, Bob Nolan, and the Sons of the Pioneers to Bobby Driscoll and Luana Patten. Melody Time is considered to be the last anthology feature made by the Walt Disney Animation Studios (the next film to be released was The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, which featured two stories). Rogers was second only to Walt Disney in the number of items featuring his name. Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers in Rainbow Over Texas, 1946. The Sons of the Pioneers continued their popularity and have not stopped performing from the time Rogers started the group, replacing members as they retired or died (all original members are dead). Although Rogers was no longer an active member, they often appeared as his backup group in films, radio, and television, and he would occasionally appear with them in performances up until his death. "(There'll Never Be Another) Pecos Bill" (Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers).

The popular image is of Johnny Appleseed spreading apple seeds randomly everywhere he went. One of the more successful films was Melody Time, the animated 1948 film from Walt Disney Studios featuring Dennis Day. The Legend of Johnny Appleseed, a 19-minute segment, tells the story of an apple farmer who sees others going west, wistfully wishing he was not tied down by his orchard, until an angel appears, singing an apple song, setting Johnny on a mission. When he treats a skunk kindly, all animals everywhere thereafter trust him.

Melody Time is considered to be the last anthology feature made by the Walt Disney Animation Studios. They were ‘financially (and artistically) lightweight productions meant to bring in profits return to fairy tale single-narrative feature form. But one day, Bill was fishing with the pack when all the sudden he saw Slue-Foot Sue riding a giant catfish down the Rio Grande. He instantly fell in love with her. After a couple adventures and dates together, Pecos proposes to Sue and decided they should get married right then and there. Sue accepted his proposal and insisted on riding Widow-Maker before the wedding. But ol’ Widow-Maker was jealous of no longer having Bill’s undivided attention and bounced Sue off; she lands on her bustle and begins bouncing higher and higher.

Roy Rogers’ band, the Sons of the Pioneers, would sing. That tonal dissonance may also explain why, outside of the Bumble Boogie and Pecos Bill shorts, which Disney has frequently repackaged into other formats, Melody Time is one of the least known and least regarded of the anthology films-despite having, smack dab in the middle, groundbreaking special effects better than anything Disney had created in years, something they would not match until.
