The Beautiful South were an English pop rock group formed in 1988 by Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway, two former members of the Hull group the Housemartins, both of whom performed lead and backing vocals. Other members throughout the band's existence were former Housemartins roadie Sean Welch (bass), Dave Stead (drums) and Dave Rotheray (guitar). The band's original material was written by the team of Heaton and Rotheray.

Formed in 1989, The Beautiful South have since then found a perfect musical niche which they haven’t significantly deviated from ever since. While they’re finally showing signs of losing their songwriting touch now, however, between 1989 and 2000 they released a string of albums that ranged from the impressive, to the frankly outstanding. Quench is probably one of the weakest Beautiful South albums from that time period, and yet has many charming features that fans of the band will certainly be able to enjoy. That’s because the most infuriating thing about Quench is that it is halfway to being a classic Beautiful South album, and therefore pretty much by default close to being a classic pop album (make no mistake about it, at their best these guys make pop music that is pretty much as good as it gets).

In what has become a familiar pattern, Quench, the Beautiful South's sixth regular album release (not counting the singles compilation Carry on Up the Charts), entered the British charts at number one in October 1998, following the number two success of its single, "Perfect 10," while in the . its release was delayed until July 1999, when it made. no commercial impression at all. As usual, Paul Heaton and his comrades take a jaundiced look at the world while crooning melodically over pop, rock, and cocktail jazz tracks.
How bad is for the health of music to watch a distinct pop band, sinking in the sea of mediocrity, while their pen still remains sharp and idiosyncratic.

Another No. 1 album in the . Quench completes the Beautiful South's transition from eccentric pop outsiders to British pop institutions well-beloved by awkward aunties and pimply Q readers alike. The 1960s and '70s melodies still come as easy as Sunday morning, while Paul Heaton's lyrics remain inventive enough to suit all three fine vocalists.
