Tilt (Mick Parks & Mick Wilson) have done just that with their latest ‘The Left Of Centre EP’. The EP is an eclectic collection of three tracks and the first in an ongoing series. As taken from the official press release here is a description of each track: ‘The Siren’, (track one on the EP and over 8 minutes long), weaves seductive female vocals and North African tribal rhythms together with tablas and finger cymbals, providing an irresistible lure over the sound of a distant siren. A drum roll and bassline propels the tune into a mesmerising piece of uptempo beauty two thirds of the way.

Talk about Tilt - Left Of Centre EP

DJ Damnage wrote a great review here for Discogs, but since so many years have passed, this release is worthy of a retrospective review. It is certainly true that Tilt was taking their sound in a more varied direction in 2003, and fans of their earlier work may be taken by surprise here. "The Siren" on side A is loaded with abstraction, from chanting female vocals (thus the title), oddly timed breakbeats, and layer upon layer of ever-changing melodic elements with Arabian house undertones. Taken as a whole, it's a bit busy, and hard to compare to their other work. The B side has "One Mile Deep", a breaks track that, while not ahead of its time, can work with contemporary breakbeat tunes in a modern mix set if one needs a slight trance influence. "Bitter And Twisted" is a vocal downtempo track suitable, for example, of the opening of any 1990s James Bond film that merely serves to provide a third genre for an EP release, as if Tilt needed to impress a broad spectrum audience and not cater to their own fan base.

Returning after dropping "Headstrong" with Maria Nayler in 2002, Parks and Wilson continue along the Quivver(John Graham)-less road and drop this EP out of the fairly new Trust The DJ label. "Left of Centre" is just that, a 3 (yes 3, whoever wrote the track listing for the discogs release page added an extra track for some reason thats not on the official release) song EP of not your typical Tilt material. First of is "The Siren", a dark, sexy track that has all the pull of Jade's "A Day In The...." and Mavi's "Sufi"/"Doobie" rolled into one. Haunting vocals laced over a slow builder makes this track a good 4am track. Flip for "One Mile Deep" as Tilt take on breakbeats and rock it Elite Force/Whole Nine Yards style. "Bitter and Twisted" finishes out the EP with a generic downtempo style that, after hearing the new Hybrid album promo, leaves something to be desired. All in All, a great EP for all the Tilt heads out there (Including me).
