Sir Edward William Elgar, 1st Baronet OM GCVO (2 June 1857 – 23 February 1934) was an English composer, many of whose works have entered the British and international classical concert repertoire. Among his best-known compositions are orchestral works including the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, concertos for violin and cello, and two symphonies. Violin Concerto (Mendelssohn). Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64, is his last large orchestral work. It forms an important part of the violin repertoire and is one of the most popular and most frequently performed violin concertos of all time. A typical performance lasts just under half an hour.

THE BACKSTORY Edward Elgar holds sway as an essential representative of the Edwardian Era, the late-Imperialist moment of British history named after the monarch who reigned over it-Edward VII, who on July 4, 1904 turned the composer into Sir Edward. The son of an organist in Worcester, Elgar enjoyed a career early on, deputizing for his father in church lofts, picking up a bit of instruction on violin, serving as bandmaster at the Worcester County Lunatic Asylum, and, in 1882, acceding to the position of music director of the Worcester Amateur Instrumental Music Society. The Andante is set far away, in B-flat major. As the orchestra repeats its opening strain, the violin adds a melody to the middle of the texture.

Violin Concerto In B minor, O. 1: Cadenza (accompagnata: Lento) - Allegro molto. 5. Variations On An Origianal Theme ('Enigma'), Op. 36: Theme (Andante). When I say ancient I mean late 20s and early 30s. There are many advantages to having this recording, the most notable of which is that Sir Elgar himself directs the orchestra. There's something magical about hearing a piece conducted by the composer. The only drawback is that the recording is from the 20s and 30s.
