Cut 4 Me is an ambitiously catchy record as well as being an aesthetically ambitious one. Essential to this is Kelela’s decision to play against the beats' moodiness-that juxtaposition drives the album’s likability. The beat by NA for Do It Again is horror-movie creepy, with a hypnotic John Carpenter-like keyboard figure looping over booming haunted house drums, which she decided to use as the foundation for an slow-motion sex jam straight out of the Aaliyah playbook. The voice can be worked on, though. The more important things that Cut 4 Me teaches us about Kelela are that she has the taste to pick out a fantasy all-star team of collaborators, the talent to make herself heard over their beats, and the intelligence to get it all together at the exact right moment. That’s all instinct, and that can’t be learned.

By setting the emotional expressiveness of ’90s R&B to the stark, adventurous sounds of UK bass music, she’s finally found the perfect formula. From the dank grime of Enemy to the title track’s snipped dubstep beats, the spaciousness of the music always allows Kelela’s melodic, love-bruised vocal to shine. As a result, Cut 4 Me never loses the biting point between invention and immediacy.

I think Kelela was the best thing that happened to R&B in 2013. She's got great voice skills and her lyrics are really good. Her soulful sing-songwriting (with cool vibes from the 90s) matches perfectly the team of underground, left-field producers that worked on her debut mixtape - Nguzunguzu, Kingdom, Bok Bok and Morri$, the crew from Fade To Mind. They're good and talented, too, but Kelela rises and shines by her own. I'm looking forward to see what she's gonna.

Released October 1, 2013. 1. Guns & Synths Lyrics. Kelela’s debut project Cut 4 Me was released on Oct 1st, 2013 by Fade To Mind via soundcloud. It was universally acclaimed and made the best of lists for outlets such as Complex, Emusic, Urban Outfitters, The Guardian, Time Out London, Spin, & Time. Many of the instrumentals are a mutable hybrid of grime and R&B, known as Rhythm & Grime, and post dubstep; influenced by British artists she was able to work with directly at the time.

But Cut 4 Me isn’t that album; Kelela is too dominant a singer, and in any case Cut 4 Me isn’t really a dance album. It’s an extremely smart and idiosyncratic R&B record, and it belongs entirely to Kelela, not to her collaborators. In interviews, Kelela talks a lot about her ’90s R&B influences - I would like to do Brandy but weirder, she told FACT - but her two greatest influences come from just outside that universe. Groove Theory’s Amel Larrieux is a soul-jazz singer whose greatest asset was her otherworldly poise, and Kelela used to drive from .

Kelela - CUT 4 ME Singers teaming up with forward-thinking dance producers to make pure pop has become a trend-think of Jessie Ware and Julio Bashmore, or Katy B and Geeneus. But the idea of that taking place within the Night Slugs, Fade To Mind axis, which includes some of bass music's most exciting and experimental artists, is downright salivating. Kelela's voice is distinctive, a slightly nasal coo that can reach impressive highs. She puts on a tough face for much of CUT 4 ME-"Enemy" and "Floor Show" are triumphant tell-offs. Elsewhere she channels that energy into a powerful sexuality that isn't too far from Natasha Kmeto. She's even better at being soft and sweet, where the real nuance in her voice comes out. The record's highlight is probably the two fragments of the Morri$-produced "Go All Night," with her breathy commands twisting and turning effortlessly.
