No surprise to see eight recordings of Nielsen's genial Flute Concerto in The Classical Catalogue. Clearly the flute lobby is well served, and attractive though Petri Alanko's playing is, I doubt whether it is special enough to stand out from the crowd. The Nielsen is idiomatically played-poetic, cultured and slightly reserved, just as the composer visualized it. The accompaniment, too, is far more carefully shaped than we sometimes hear. What I miss is a degree of fantasy, a degree of flexibility in moments of poetic inwardness, and a degree of stroppiness from the all-important bass trombone.
