The second Piano Quartet in Eb k493 is more placid temperamentally but ironically sounds livelier, more electric. It is one of the best versions that I have heard. The performances here of Mozart's Piano Quartets are simply legendary in their absolute perfection of interpretation: no one even comes close. It is here one can see why Rubinstein was such a genius of a pianist whose standard is yet to be surpassed by even the most talented. Mozart's Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, K. 478, is considered the first major piece composed for piano quartet in the chamber music repertoire. The piece is scored for violin, viola, cello, and piano. Mozart received a commission for three quartets in 1785 from the publisher Franz Anton Hoffmeister.
