Battalions of Fear is the debut album by German metal band Blind Guardian released in 1988. The album is a raw and unpolished speed metal effort that touches on thrash metal. It lacks many of the stylistic flourishes that would mark the band's music in later years, focusing more on speed and aggression.

What we have here is Blind Guardian's debut album "Battalions Of Fear" in a "modern" shape as said by the band. The album has been completely remixed and remastered and they've added some demo songs from their early works as "Lucifer's Heritage. When I first heard "Battalions Of Fear" it sounded somewhat "typical" of a debut album from a band who has been around since the 1980s as far as sound quality goes - somewhat weak drums, thin guitars, less bass guitar presense, and reverbed vocals

Totally awful version. It's like album for poor people, who even don't need ANY kind of good-looking booklet. Besides that, even the CD looks like an CD-R made in LightScride printer. P.S. Five stars I gave is because of music.

Dead ugly colour I got myself, doesn't do the record justice, absolutely unfitting.Soundwise definitely different to the original. It sounds less raw, but actually more biased, and warm and natural enough to my ears. They have cut down a lot of the lower frequencies from the snaredrum. The guitars sound more crisp and generally there is more punch to everything - call it compression. Generally I wouldn't have minded a little more deep end, the bassdrum seems a bit buried in the mix, and the bass guitar is less audible than I remember it. If you want the record to sound like in 1988, go for an original pressing, this one has a more 'modern' sound, to put it neutrally. Doesn't sound bad to me though.

Completely remastered and remixed. The glorious sound and atmosphere of the 80s is gone and instead it now sounds so god damn polished. Too clean, neo and compressed. Extreme letdown. Do NOT buy if you don't like or need a new remixed sound. Which is, needless to say, utter crap compared to the original mix. This is the remaster from '07/08, remixed in' 11, and sounds nothing like the remasters from last year - which is just plain weird that they are not the ones reissued on LP as they sound much more like the old mixes. Huge letdown.

PLEASE note, the test press is available in two different packaging's, hence the two different layout of the info sheet. And one with white cover and one with yellow cover (but these might not be original). I ASSUME one was used for promotional matters, including a poster in A1 format. But the matrix are the same so the actual vinyl is the same no matter which version you get hold of. Of course the one including poster is harder to get hold of.

The first time I heard of Blind Guardian was in 2002, when I'd bought Iced Earth's 'Dark Genesis' collection and they were mentioned a number of times in the biography section. It wasn't too long after that I was in a music shop, coincidently in the bands home country of Germany, where I saw a double pack of 'Battalions of Fear' and it's follow-up album 'Follow the Blind' pretty cheap. Didn't even have to think about what to do.By this point, I was no longer the young, metal whippersnapper that I was when I'd first heard of Blind Guardian. I had a good sense of what I was into, and, to be blunt, I found this album to be pretty boring and dull. Fast-forward a couple more years, and MySpace is suddenly booming and it's easier than ever to discover bands. THAT'S when I really got into Blind Guardian! I can't remember which song I heard, but it was big! It was epic! It was bombastic! It was full of metal riffs and glorious orchestrations... it was incredible! How did I not get into this band the first time around?!I swiftly snapped up most of the groups back-catalogue, then set to work familiarizing myself with their discography...And that leads me right back to square one; this album is still pretty bland. There's just nothing really exciting going on here... y'know what I mean? 'Majesty' is an okay song, but most of the tracks are pretty basic power/speed metal. The production leaves the music feeling empty of life, and a lot of the melodies, both musical and lyrical, are just boring and uninteresting. It's not a terrible album, but if you're looking for some generic and bland 80's power metal, there's much better stuff out there.

After two demos under the name of Lucifer's Heritage, Blind Guardian, just signed on No Remorse Records, release their first album Battalions Of Fear. Some years after, Virgin Records reedit their release on a cd. They were, with Helloween, actually the pioneers of Speed Metal. And, in fact, their sound was totally different than Helloween. Heavier sound, more direct sound, Blind Guardian hit with strength for their first album. From Majesty to the epic Battalions Of Fear, all the songs are very inspired and put the listener in a dark fantasy world. The cover is in fact caracteristic. The Guardian plays a chess game in a world where the music is the lines. Hansi Kürsch has on this album very harsh vocals which, supported by the Olbrich's and Siepen's speed guitars, create a real ambiance. The only weakness of this release is, to my mind, instrumental tracks which are placed to its end. They destabilize the listener and unbalance the album. One would have been enough, but the reedition deals with a bonus track.
