World Of The Waking State's percussion is nimble and precise. The 4/4 pulse central to Steffi hits like "Yours" and "Sadness" is gone, replaced by syncopated hi-hats and kick drums that move around the grid. These restless beats, which never stay the same for long, aren't drawn from familiar sources-909s, 808s, 707s-but from Steffi's cache of drum synthesisers, which adds to the album's alien sound. Basslines splutter underneath broken halftime rhythms, like the one on "Schools Of Thought," the closest World Of The Waking State gets to classic. The album is full of these ambiguous but powerful moments, where the mood, whether melancholic, hopeful or something else, belongs to the listener. These tracks bring to mind another crucial era: the early days of Ostgut Ton.

Steffi has a new solo album on the way via Ostgut Ton. Out on September 22nd, World Of The Waking State will be the Dutch artist's third LP with the Berghain-run outlet, following on from 2014's Power Of Anonymity. According to Ostgut Ton, it was "created in a period when she found herself free of the past and settled more comfortably in her own skin," resulting in a record that's more experimental than previous efforts. Spanning ten tracks, it'll be Steffi's second major release of 2017, after last month's fabric 94 mix.

Berlin's lady of ladies, Steffi, returns to familiar settings with this latest album, a deep and calculating blend of technoid sonics for the mighty Ostgut Ton imprint. The DJ-producer has been known to deliver absurdly twisted sets at the Berlin institution over the years, but the majority of her work has been made up of short collaborations and comparatively more dance-centric material. World Of The Waking State feels like a change of gear, where the focus on dance has been replaced by something much more imperceptible and inward looking.

Steffi occupies a unique space in the realm of contemporary electronic music. Although she s a world renowned DJ, Steffi s musical interests reach far beyond the dancefloor, and it s her work as a producer that has established an impressive, hard-won legacy. Soon after moving to Berlin in 2007, Steffi joined Ostgut, becoming a resident at Panorama Bar and releasing on the club s label. To date she s released five albums, including two solo for Ostgut Ton, a co-production with Virginia, another with Analogue Cops as Third Side and a collaboration as Doms & Deykers on Martyn s 3024 label. She owns and operates four labels: Klakson (with Dexter), Dolly, Dolly Deluxe and Dolly Dubs. World Of The Waking State is Steffi s third solo album for Ostgut Ton and a musical departure for both her and the label. It s also a serious statement of intent.
