to Freedom is the 1992 debut album by the Southern California ska-punk band Sublime released by Skunk Records and again by MCA. 40oz. Sublime would not achieve any mainstream success until the release of their eponymous album in 1996, two months after the death of their lead singer and guitarist, Bradley Nowell

to Freedom’s only binding thread, on the other hand, was Nowell’s insatiable need to play a little bit of everything. The album feels like a marathon attempt to hold his own interest, cannonballing from ska to thrash to dub to campfire sing-alongs at the speed of a Beavis and Butt-Head channel-surfing session. Never mind that Sublime weren’t great at all of those styles, or even most of them. In their wide embrace of music, they came to stand for something greater than any single sound: a spirit of radical inclusion. was an enormously prescient record, predicting hip-hop’s influence on the late-’90s alternative sound years before a DJ became a perfectly normal thing for a rock band to have on its payroll. Mostly, though, the album resonated because it captured a lifestyle.

To Freedom" reached on Billboard's Heatseekers and produced the hit "Date Rape". One version of this album (released on Skunk Records) had 23 tracks.

Sublime has always been a great band; becoming famous even as their frontman ceased to live. They released three albums in the duration of Brad Nowell's lifetime, and this one, 40 Oz. to Freedom, is IMO their best as well as the bands first. All legends have to start somewhere; and in this case, it was a few living rooms and a studio over in Long Beach, California. With a total of 22 tracks (21 of them being actual songs), this album has alot to give.

I'm not comin back Ohh not going back God knows I'm not going back God knows I'm not going back.

40 Oz. to Freedom is a truly unique album from a band that thrived during music's heyday; the 1990's. Sublime played a fast blend of punk rock, ska and reggae. The infamous Bradley Nowell powered the Sublime machine with shredding solos and stoner sensibilities. Nowell's lyrics tend to sound awfully misogynist but at other times Nowell gives off a worldly and anarchistic vibe. This is music of a true bum, easy going and laid back, yet passionate.

Talk about Sublime - 40oz. To Freedom

Madis
Is there a difference between this sleeve and glow in the dark sleeve? Might buy a sealed “glow in the dark” vinyl. But dont want to overpay for the cranberry. Is there a difference between this sleeve and glow in the dark sleeve? No pictures of the back cover here on discogs. Is there a 77 logo like the glow in the dark?
Marirne
So my copy the tracklisting on the inner sleeves and also on the disc sticker is incorrect. Date Rape is listed as track C6 for both but it is actually D1 on the disc.
Nahn
AMAZING SOUND! Kind of blown away actually how good this pressing is
Enalonasa
Good sound. Bass is deep and full. Maybe overly so, especially on Waiting For My Ruca, but true to the original recording.
Sharpmane
When I purchased this album wasn't aware that every track was not included. However still very enjoyable.
Porgisk
Wow. I ordered this picture disc a week ago and just saw this message. I'm pretty disappointed, I don't even know how you'd call this 40oz. To Freedom without Smoke 2 Joints, Date Rape, and Rivers of Babylon. I'm going to buy a plain-old 2-LP version of this and the picture disc is going up for sale. Sigh. Big middle finger to whoever half-assed this pressing 凸 (ಠ益ಠ) 凸 Thanks for the heads up but wish I saw your message a week ago.
spark
Anyone know when this was released? About how many copies of this are out there?
Snowseeker
Most of the first LPs I've seen are warped, beyond playable. Must of been something during production.
INvait
Mine actually plays perfect. Packaging is weird so I just moved it over to protective sleeves.
energy breath
so this is a no go? poor quality vinyl and sound? what a let down
Pad
yes, thats how mine is. Playable, but barely. A shame. Pretty sure its the only pic disc i own, and i wont be buying anymore. Sound quality suffers.
Zulkishicage
+1. The best sounding and best looking press of this album by far.
Hunaya
My non-audiophile ears couldn't pick up anything really wrong with this pressing but the 180 gram doesn't really improve it's sound. It's definitely not worth the extra 25 bucks to have it on 180 gram. Still one of my favorite albums though
Zuser
Agree with kronius & midas801. Such a shame! This is a fantastic album but a terrible pressing. Bass is muddy, highs and vocals lack definition. CD sounds better. Lesson learned: I will read Discogs reviews *before* purchase in the future.
Tojahn
I had major quality issues with mine. The first one was so uneven I sent it back to amazon, second one looked just the same. The third one finally passed okayish. Still not great, but I guess I can live with it.
Thorgahuginn
This pressing is terrible. Super noisy throughout the entire record. Very disappointing.
Vathennece
I was excited about this rerelease... but am really not a big fan of the remaster. Should have left the mixing to the pro's.
Marilace
Not 180 gram vinyl for regular edition but is listed as "audiophile quality"
JUST DO IT
SRC wasn't behind this reissue, don't know what you're talking about.
Vudozilkree
I was disappointed the non lenticular version wasn't 180 gram but it does sound great IMO. SRC does really nice reissues.
Anasius
"Audiophile quality" and 180 gram / 200 gram is marketing hype. However, heavy weight records hold their shape better and don't warp so easily. The most important factors are the quality of the mastering job and how well the disc was pressed.
Lbe
Weight does not dictate quality in any way, it only preserves the record longer.
Bys
Anyone heard this pressing yet? Any difference vs. the standard press?
BORZOTA
is there a version of "Thanx" that is complete on another release other than the 1st edition cassette?
VizoRRR
Easily the best looking pressing of 40oz. Any suggestions on modern bands like Sublime?
Malien
Someone recently turned me on to a Minneapolis band called Jon Wayne & The Pain. I would highly recommend them to any Sublime fan.
Bu
some bands that make some nice WhiteboyReggae too:Jaya The Cat, Bfoundation, Living Dred, Tsunami Rising, Perro Bravo,Knock-Out, Deadman Relay, The Sindicate and so on and so on
Zainn
Early Tropidelic ep's are the closest thing I've come across to the original sublime sound. Listen to the EP with Suburban Surfer and the EP Erie Vibes and Irie Tides.
Gtonydne
New pressing on the way..... Pre order at src.com
Villo
I can't believe this is already going for almost a hundo
