Perfect Symmetry is the third studio album by English rock band Keane, released on 13 October 2008 in the United Kingdom. According to international Island Records manager, Jon Turner, "the general international feel is of excitement and 'Spiralling' is a favourite track of the US company.
Possibly inspired by Chaplin's recovery from drink and drug addiction, Keane's third album wields a sledgehammer at these preconceptions and showcases a creatively adventurous group who've developed a healthy fascination with seventies and eighties pop music. While existing fans may lament the shift towards brasher pop stylings, this album only loses its way when Keane slip back into their old bad habits. Closer 'Love Is The End' is a saccharine attempt at a lighters-aloft show-stopper that falls down under the weight of its own seriousness.
Unfortunately, Perfect Symmetry is an album characterized by its heavy-handedness, so while it sounds as though the band was aiming for Echo & the Bunnymen, they hit Duran Duran or Simple Minds instead, making for a brand new record that often sounds badly dated.
In an interview before the album had been completed, Rice-Oxley told Qmagazine February 2008: "'Perfect Symmetry' sounds like something off (Bowie's 1973 album) Aladdin Sane. Rice-Oxley explained to The Sun why Keane chose the album title Perfect Symmetry. He said: "It's about the extremes of the human condition. The way that people have this capacity for real greatness and achievement, yet also this ability to sabotage and destroy everything.
Keane: they might just save someone's life. Keane - are they the piano-pumping bearers of glad tidings, or the band you want to throw things at when they appear on your Sunday morning TV? Chances are it's one or the other, there's no in-between with Keane. Their brand of uplifting guitar-free cleverness (and they are clever) says nothing to many people about their lives. Yet Perfect Symmetry, their third album, confirms them as just being bloody amazing at what they know
