The artwork says the recordings are from 1971, but they were actually recorded in 1972. Another set of demos, produced by Kim Fowley, were released as the band's "second album", The Original Modern Lovers, in 1981.

Rock 'N' Roll with the Modern Lovers. Richman branches out to Japanese music, a "South American Folk Song," and even "Egyptian Reggae" (the last earning him a UK Top 5 hit), but the real highlight on Rock 'N' Roll with the Modern Lovers is that ode to a totaled car, "Dodge Veg-O-Matic.

1LP. This is the eponymous debut studio album by the American Rock band The Modern Lovers, originally released in 1976. They influenced numerous aspiring punk rock musicians on both sides of the Atlantic, including the Sex Pistols, whose early cover of "Roadrunner" was placed on The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle. 180 gram audiophile vinyl. The Modern Lovers were formed in 1970 by teenage singer, songwriter, guitarist Jonathan Richman, augmented with Jerry Harrison (keyboards), Ernie Brooks (bass) and David Robinson (drums), with Richman's friend and original band member John Felice joining them occasionally.

This album (Rock and Rock with the Modern Lovers) was the second he recorded in this style, and he's pretty much kept to this ever since. Why he didn't rename the band is a mystery (all the original members except for him were gone by this time), but probably is just Jonathan's way of having some fun by thwarting our expectations. In fact, even the name of this album is misleading; these songs don't sound anything like any rock and roll you are probably used to. There are several instrumentals or near-instrumentals, and most of the other songs are more like children's.

The Modern Lovers were an American rock band led by Jonathan Richman in the 1970s and 1980s. The original band, billed simply as "The Modern Lovers", existed from 1970–74 but their recordings were not released until 1976 or later. It featured Jonathan Richman and bassist Ernie Brooks with drummer David Robinson (later of The Cars) and keyboardist Jerry Harrison (later of Talking Heads).
