Chernobyl star Alex Ferns revealed that his family were personally affected by the nuclear disaster which is believed to have killed thousands. Ferns believes that his uncle, Robert Stephenson, 47, died from cancer caused by rain that had been 'poisoned' with radiation from the nuclear disaster. He said Mr Stephenson told family and friends that he believed Chernobyl was the cause of his cancer after he was forced to carry on working in the rain by his boss. Mr Stephenson worked for the Scottish Water Board in the Killearn area in Scotland in 1986, when a health warning was issued advising people to avoid drinking rain water when radiation was discovered.

Like they’re falling aslee. t almost looks like suicide. For further memoirs: in 2014, literary critic Roman Leibov wrote in Kommersant about living in Kyiv in 1986. He recalls, among other things, advice to drink potassium iodide and rumors that red wine helped counteract radiation. before the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. The situation at the Chernobyl power plant shocked Legasov: At the station, there was such unpreparedness, such confusion, and such fear. It was like 41,, but worse somehow. It was the same as in Brest, with the same courage, the same desperation, and the same unpreparednes. .

What do Chernobyl and Pripyat look like now? Pripyat remains empty 33 years after the initial explosion, although some people did return to their homes that sit within the 19 miles exclusion zone around the power plant. Tourists and photographers have travelled to the abandoned town to see the time capsule that has been formed in homes, schools and parks that haven’t been touched since 1986.

Ahead, 17 images that show what the zone looks like today. The cause of the explosion was two-fold. The first major issue was that the power station was built with faulty construction and what American physicist and Nobel laureate Hans Bethe has called "built-in instability". Pieces of burning metal went in the air, causing fires where they landed. Due to the poisonous radiation, the Chernobyl site was declared a permanent no-go zone. Gleb Garanich/Reuters. The city of Pripyat, located a little over a mile from the nuclear plant, was inhabited mostly by power plant workers and their families.

CHERNOBYL and the nearby Pripyat remains abandoned 33 years after the nuclear disaster. CLASS ROOM: An abandoned class room near Chernobyl (Pic: GETTY). Pripyat today looks like a ghost town – and it is like going back in time as the homes, schools and parks haven’t been touched since 1986. For example, one picture of a classroom in Pripyat shows paperwork and shelving spread across the floor. Fun fairs and kindergartens can be seen – but no sign of life is present in the city, apart from some roaming tourists.

The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the No. 4 nuclear reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, near the city of Pripyat in the north of the Ukrainian SSR. It is one of only two nuclear energy disasters rated as INES 7, the maximum severity classification. The accident started during a safety test on an RBMK type nuclear reactor, which was commonly used throughout the Soviet Union

Russian military pilots have described how they created rain clouds to protect Moscow from radioactive fallout after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986. Major Aleksei Grushin repeatedly took to the skies above Chernobyl and Belarus and used artillery shells filled with silver iodide to make rain clouds that would "wash out" radioactive particles drifting towards densely populated cities. The wind direction was moving from west to east and the radioactive.
