Karl-Birger Blomdahl: Aniara A Space Opera In Two Acts. Blomdahl's Aniara (based on a series of poems by Harry Martinson) is called an Opera but really functions more like an oratorio with soloists and chorus as there are very few "conversations" or dramatic interactions between the cast. The music is quite varied stylistically and not typical classical music. There are passages where electronic tape provides "space movie" type sounds but mostly an orchestra plays the music. Stylistically this is not pop music but neither is it particularly difficult to grasp.
An opera by Karl-Birger Blomdahl also called Aniara premiered in 1959 with a libretto by Erik Lindegren based on Martinson's poem; it was staged in Stockholm, Hamburg, Brussels and Darmstadt, and later in Gothenburg and Malmö. Swedish musician Kleerup released an album based on Aniara in 2012 The fourth album from the Swedish progressive metal band Seventh Wonder called The Great Escape is based on Aniara, the title track last 30:21 minu.
