1965’s Nowhere to Run is one of the seminal Motown records, combining the songwriting prowess of nd and the backing music of the Funk Brothers, who used snow chains to bolster their hard-driving percussion section. Nowhere to Run sounds like it’s about a bad romance, but songwriter Lamont Dozier revealed he was also inspired by seeing tanks in the street during the turbulent ’60s.

I know you're no good for me But free of you, I'll never be, no. Each night as I sleep, into my heart you creep I wake up feeling sorry I met you Hoping soon, that I'll forget you. When I look in the mirror, to comb my hair I see your face just a-smilin' there.

The song is titled "Nowhere To Run," but Martha Reeves sings, "Nowhere to run t. It's a case of shoddy grammar (ending a sentence in a preposition) done for the sake of the rhythm. Janet Jackson intended on recording a remake of this on her 1990 Rhythm Nation 1814 album before being persuaded by her songwriters Jam and Lewis to record a song with a similar beat. The end result was her American chart-topper "Escapade. More songs from Martha & the Vandellas. More songs used in movies. More songs that start with the chorus  . It reached on Billboard's R&B Singles chart.

Martha and the Vandellas (known from 1967 to 1972 as Martha Reeves and the Vandellas) were an American all-female vocal group formed in 1957. The group achieved fame in the 1960s with Motown. Formed in 1957 by friends Annette Beard, Rosalind Ashford and Gloria Williams, the group eventually included Martha Reeves, who moved up in ranks as lead vocalist of the group after Williams' departure in 1962. The group signed with and eventually recorded all of their singles for Motown's Gordy imprint.
