Also known as Alhaja Chief Batile Alake, Batile Alake. Caution! All audio materials of Batile Alake & Her Group are presented solely for information.
An Ijebu Yoruba from Epe, in Lagos State, she began her professional career in waka music when she released her debut album, Late General Murtala Ramat Mohammed, in 1976, on Leader Records.
As matter of fact, Batile Alake was one of the musicians that entertained Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Nigeria in 1956. In the ’60s and ’70s however, Waka was slightly overshadowed by the newer Fuji and Juju sounds. Her very first album on the label was her 1976 record, Late Murtala Muhammed, dedicated to the recently assassinated head of state. It sold over one million records, thrusting the teenager into instant stardom. She even rode the Indian movie wave at the time and released an album called Indian Waka. It was inevitable that such a young, single lady would be inundated with love proposals of all sorts.
The phrase Waka Waka actually means to do something, as in a task. The song was made popular by a mokossa group in Africa who was best known for their silly song and dance. Back in the 1980’s when the song that included lyrics that are in the Chorus of Waka Waka was a hit, people in Colombia went clubbing and danced to the song. Therefore, Waka Waka is a tribute to both South African culture and Colombian culture at the same time.
Waka music is a popular Islamic-oriented Yoruba musical genre. It was made popular by Alhaja Batile Alake from Ijebu, who took the genre into the mainstream Nigerian music by playing it at concerts and parties; also, she was the first waka singer to record an album. Later, younger singers like Salawa Abeni and Kuburatu Alaragbo joined the pack. In 1992, Salawa Abeni was crowned "Queen of Waka" by the Alafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.
