Charles Rudolf Friml (December 7, 1879 – November 12, 1972) was a Czech-born composer of operettas, musicals, songs and piano pieces, as well as a pianist. Signature of Rudolf Friml. The Bohemian Club (Czech: Česká beseda) was a club founded in 1899 that was frequented by Chicago's Czech elite, as well as the visiting elite from Czechoslovakia.

The Firefly (1912) was Rudolf Friml's first operetta and has remained one of his more popular works. Albany continues its series of the Ohio Light Opera's productions of classic operettas with the first complete recording of The Firefly, including dialogue. All the principals are accomplished singers and comedians, with light, young-sounding voices ideally suited to the music. The orchestra, which plays fleetly under the direction of Jason Altieri, is smaller than what Friml would have used in the original production, and it takes some getting used to the smallish sound of this ensemble. This recording should be of strong interest to fans of early twentieth century operetta and American popular music of that period.
