Abraham, Martin and John" is a 1968 song written by Dick Holler and first recorded by Dion. It is a tribute to the memory of four assassinated Americans, all icons of social change: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King J. John F. Kennedy, and Robert F. Kennedy. It was written in response to the assassination of King and that of Robert Kennedy in April and June 1968, respectively.

Abraham, Martin and John came out in the late summer of 1968, not long after the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, around the time when the police were using billy clubs on protesters at the Democratic convention in Chicago, and the record was vague enough ("Didn't you love the things that they stood for?"), and. Dion's vocal was soothing enough-it was almost prayerful-to be warmly embraced across the political spectrum. It was cut, he told me in a recent e-mail, in Dukoff Studios "in the back of a bowling alley on Seventh Avenue Route 441," with a bunch of guys from Liberty City (the Miami neighborhood featured in Barry Jenkins's Oscar-winning Moonlight) pounding on cardboard boxes. The artist listed on the acetate was "3rd Rail"-"a name I invented," Dion says, "to play in the Bronx clubs with Cario and Johnny Falbo.

Abraham, Martin & John. Includes the bonus track 'Daddy Rollin' (In Your Arms)' the B-side of the single release of 'Abraham, Martin And John'. After his earlier career, both with the Belmonts and as a solo artist, Dion made some revelatory blues recordings for the Columbia label. Heroin addiction then took it's toll and he stayed out of the studio for several years. In 1968, cleaned up but without a record deal, he approached Laurie Records, the company that released his first recordings with the Belmonts.
