Maye the real lesson of "I Believe in Father Christmas" isn't that it's been perverted by Commercial interests; but that there is so little left in Christmas that resembles what it was created for, that most of us have never even heard the true message of this special celebration the first place. Lianna from Sylva, NcIt is also really funny to me how many people presume to speak for Greg Lake, or anyone else.

I Believe in Father Christmas is a song by English musician Greg Lake with lyrics by Peter Sinfield. Although it is often categorised as a Christmas song, this was not Lake’s intention. He said that he wrote the song in protest at the commercialisation of Christmas. Sinfield, however, said that the words are about a loss of innocence and childhood belief. Released in 1975, the song reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. U2 (on the 2009 Starbucks charity compilation All You Need Is Love), Joe McElderry on his 2011 album Classic Christmas, Susan Boyle (on her 2013 album Home for Christmas) and Hannah Peel as the B-side of her 2014 single Find Peace. In 2005 Lake wrote a letter to The Guardian about the song, in answer to a reader question: In 1975, I wrote and recorded a song called I Believe in Father Christmas, which some Guardian readers may remember and may even own.

Greg Lake was born on 10 November 1947 in the Parkstone area of Poole in Dorset, to Harry, an engineer, and Pearl, a housewife. He grew up in the residential suburb of Oakdale. Speaking about his childhood, Lake said he was "born in an asbestos prefab housing unit" into a "very poor" family, and remembered. In 1975, while still a member of ELP, Lake achieved solo chart success when his single, "I Believe in Father Christmas", reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. It has become a Yuletide perennial Several months following the break-up of ELP in 1979, Lake began to write new songs and had "put down a tremendous amount of material" for his first solo album.

From the Uncut archives this week, the creation of a very unlikely festive hi. ar-footage in the promo, a stripper in the studio and swelteringly hot recording sessions. Lake himself, co-writer and co-producer Peter Sinfield, orchestrator Godfrey Salmon, ELP tour manager Andrew Lane and manager Stewart Young tell the story of a Yuletide perennial (originally in Uncut’s January 2011 issue, Take 164). Interviews: Garry Mulholland. It’s difficult to sum up the impact of first hearing I Believe In Father Christmas as a child in 1975.

Talk about Greg Lake - I Believe In Father Christmas

Cordantrius
I bought this when it came out and it was only when I bought a later pressing that I discovered that on the original pressing the B-side was faded early. The original pressing has the messages "A HAPPY XMAS TO ALL MY READERS - PORKY" on Side A / "AND HAPPY NEW YEAR Ho Ho Ho" on Side B. Stamped: K-13511-A2 / K-13511-B1.The later pressing with the "longer" B-side (i.e. the fade actually takes longer to reduce to very quiet - the duration is about the same) has stampers impressed with "STRAWBERRY" and no messages. There are also differences on the label layout.
Little Devil
I have an early copy with K-13511-B2 matrix and no "happy no year" message on side 2, yet Side 1 has "Porky" and "Happy Xmas" message. I have no ways to compare my "B2" with the "B1" "happy no year", nor can I compare it with the "Strawberry" pressings. I can say, though, that the fade out of my version seems to be longer than the US singles and the CD EP with contains Humbug. So maybe "B2" has already a different fade than "B1"? Or Maybe there are more than two different cuts???
