Pachelbel: Canon, Fasch: Concerto for trumpet. The Pachelbel Canon, Albinoni Adagio and Other Baroque Melodies. This is a true masterpiece of a german baroque composer (Johann Pachelbel). Fasch is as masterful, but under Pachelbel. The style performed by the Francois Paillard Chamber Orchestra is superb and apparently as meant to be and thought by the composers. I have many different CDs of the same music performed by different orchestras. This one is the best!

I first heard this during a Writing Class I was taking in college and fell in love with this version. I have heard and as a matter of fact I have a number of versions of Pachelbel's Canon in D Major but this is the best. Jean-Francois Paillard was an effective advocate of baroque music and though fans of stricter adherence to early performance standards will tend not to agree, Paillard was not only an enthusiastic proponent of baroque music, but a sensitive interpreter of the music to modern audiences. The result was that his recordings were grabbed up by American listeners who often were then "hooked" on baroque music. That happened with me.

In 1968, the Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra made a recording of the piece that would change its fortunes significantly. This rendition was done in a more Romantic style, at a significantly slower tempo than it had been played at before, and contained obligato parts, written by Paillard, that are now closely associated with the piece. The Paillard recording was released. Pachelbel's Canon thus merges a strict polyphonic form (the canon) and a variation form (the chaconne, which itself is a mixture of ground bass composition and variations).
