About Beware of the Dogs. On the title track of her debut album, Stella Donnelly widens the scope of her storytelling to a broader, but no less pressing issue – the cultural and environmental destruction of Australia by its own government. What have the artists said about the song? It’s about Australian identity and what that actually means for me, as an Anglo, white Australian, and how my experience of this country can differ so much from somebody else’s based on that privilege. It also looks at the people in power, who have all the money and protect it at the expense of others
Donnelly released her first full-length album Beware of the Dogs on March 8, 2019. single Boys Will Be Boys debuted in 2017 just at the start of the "Me Too" movement was getting started. Atop delicate, singsongy acoustic fingerpicking, Donnelly confronts a man who raped her friend and takes to task the accompanying victim-blaming. Why was she all alone?/Wearing her shirt that low/And they said boys will be boys/Deaf to the word no, she coos in the chorus, a slight vibrato flaring up at the corners of her lovely voice
Stella Donnelly arrived on American shores with a message that cut through a noisy indie-rock landscape. the Perth-based songwriter’s debut was Boys Will Be Boys, a commanding song about rape culture that landed in the fall of 2017, just as crescendoed. In that moment, Donnelly’s indictment of victim-blamers echoed the sentiment of the thousands of women called upon to publicly excavate their trauma. On Beware of the Dogs, her first full-length, a more robust picture emerges. Her songs are complex and surprising, full of sharp corners poised to bruise unsuspecting limbs. Trading in humor as well as gravitas, they are often pulled taut with genuine pain and then snapped with a well-placed punch line. Opener Old Man, where Donnelly inveighs against abusers, sets the tone for the record.
In 2017 Stella Donnelly released the explosive ‘Boys Will Be Boys’, a powerful attack on victim blaming. Over trilling, stripped-back acoustics, Donnelly’s outstanding lyrics pointedly take down rape apology: They said, ‘Boys will be boys’, Deaf to the word, ‘No’.
Album · 2019 · 13 Songs. The Western Australian singer-songwriter first made her mark in 2017 with Boys Will be Boys, a powerful song that is, despite its sweet melody, an all-out attack on the culture of sexual assault victim-blaming. Two years later, her debut album is a melodic collection of guitar-based songs that directly address toxic masculinity, abuse, white Australia, and the breakdown of a relationship

Stella Donnelly’s bite is far worse than her bark. On her debut album, ‘Beware of the Dogs’ some scathing remarks-mostly focusing on inequality, sexual misconduct and toxic masculinity-are tied up neatly in sickly sweet melodies. They’re a little like the nursery rhymes your grandmother might have sung to you, until Donnelly’s innocent, dulcet voice slices through the cute on songs like Old Man. Your personality traits don’t count if you put your dick in someone’s face, she sings. The best thing about Donnelly is that she says it like it is-and ‘it’ is some pretty heavy subject matter.
Stella Donnelly spools out the kind of cuddle-core guitar pop that traditionally goes best with cardigan sweaters and shy glances in the dustiest recesses of the local used bookstore. But the Australian singer-guitarist is hardly the retiring type. But Beware of the Dogs is a triumph on its own terms, going from high point to high point as she maps the pains, pleasures and anxieties of her personal patch of twentysomething bohemia.
