CD of the Week: Corey Wilkes & Abstrakt Pulse: Cries From tha Ghetto (Pi Recordings). Chicago trumpeter Wilkes made a strong impression last year with his debut CD, Drop It, and his follow-up proves still more striking. Pushing fearlessly into avant-garde territory on some tracks, burrowing deeply into bebop and hard-bop traditions on others, he documents the versatility of his art and the range of his imagination. He leads a high-powered Chicago band, with particularly heavy lifting from saxophonist Kevin Nabors and guitarist Scott Hesse. Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

A young lion with a roar being heard in several music genres; Corey Wilkes burst onto the music scene in 2002 and landed in the soul of the Chicago Jazz Club scene. For his next feat he took on the ghost of Lester Bowie and filled the vacant trumpet seat in the the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Big shoes to fill for a new musician but Corey isn’t an ordinary musician.

The only hard part here was deciding which album gets the nod for the best of the bitchin’ batch. It was very tough, for instance, to not select one of the trio of records from the Delmark label I covered back in July. Duck Baker (pictured above) came out with not one, but two nice ones in 2009. Wadada Leo Smith issued a grand statement toward the end of the year. And then there’s the welcome return of Henry Threadgill. There’s one I keep coming back to, thoug. est CD Of The Batch: Tom Abbs & Frequency Response – Lost & Found
