Prolific artist Aidan Baker drowns his listeners in swirling pools of layered, disorted guitars, disoriented percussive themes, and hypnotic vocal samples in the appropriately entitled "Oneiromancer". The accompanying untitled album is a live guitar performance in Toronto, Canada, in April of 2005. The album begins with a slow departure from the waking world, in spite of the ironically named first track, "Wake Up". Best heard in a dark space with a sequestered mind, "Death Too Wrapped In Dream" exemplifies that hazy, perhaps worrysome space between the increasingly conscious realization of strange dreaming and the inability to wake from it. Having slowly sunken into a gray nightmare-scape, the third track, "Do You Remember Me (From Your Dreams)", twists and swims and teems with sensations of being pursued by the mephitic and familiar; a slow-motion chase through the recesses of thoughts violent and weird, ending in inevitable distressed waking. "Dreams Of Broken Glass" shifts the listener into weary, ceaseless insomnia. Things are at their most disoriented and paranoid, and the effects of persistent insomnia are manifested in the clattering, smeared lace of instruments and speech. We're just so worn, now; no longer sure if we're asleep and dreaming, or awake and sick, cursed with "Bêtes Noires". "Oneiromancer" is from the Greek for "dream": "oneiros". One can only wonder as to what Aidan Baker dreams, as his "Oneiromancer" suggests strange, fluid dreams equally apt to become nightmares or relevatory visions.
