The title comes from the asmāʾ allāh al-ḥusnā or 99 names of Allah and is a phrase that opens many Islamic prayers. My mother, although not Arabic nor Muslim, was raised in the Middle East, and I grew up in an atmosphere of much celebration of Arabic and Islamic culture through food, music, art and spirituality

This is Gavin Russom's second solo EP for new London label Entropy Trax, after June's characteristically mesmeric The Purge/Enthroned "The Beneficent, The Merciful" fares better. Named after one of the 99 names of Allah, its wistful keys and stuttering percussion confer an endearingly hesitant and flickering start that persists even when these ingredients gently coalesce. Gavin Rayna Russom (born May 1, 1974) is an American electronic music producer, musician, and DJ. Best known as the lead synthesist for the band LCD Soundsystem, Russom has also released music under various names, including Black Leotard Front, Black Meteoric Star and The Crystal Ark, as well as collaborative work with Delia Gonzalez. In addition to her musical work, Russom is also a visual artist and a writer. Russom lives in New York City.
