Miles Davis made the breakthrough into fusion in the 1970s with his album Bitches Brew. Musicians who worked with Davis formed the four most influential fusion groups: Weather Report and Mahavishnu Orchestra emerged in 1971 and were soon followed by Return to Forever and The Headhunters. Although jazz purists protested the blend of jazz and rock, some of jazz's significant innovators crossed over from the contemporary hard bop scene into fusion.

The work of OM, described in "OM: A Retrospective" is only partly successful, in my opinion. The pieces chosen for the anthology, are not always the best. Above all, with these choices, you are likely to give the group a picture radically wrong. Council hearing if possible "Kirikuki" '76 and "Rautionaha" '77 (Japo) records.

OM - Kirikuki (Japo Records-W. Driving, pushy modal jazz-rock with killer improvising and unique techniques by all, causing some mystery about where some sounds are coming from. Recorded & engineered in 1975 at Ludwigsburg, o feo One of my all time fave bands! This is good, but "Rautionaha" is so fkin amazing! a. nuevo o feo I'll keep my eyes peeled for that on. .This the only record I have by them & I really dig it.

OM - Christy Doran, Urs Leimgruber, Bobby Burri, Fredy Studer. June 27. OM- Urs Leimgruber, Bobby Burri, Fredy Studer, Christy Doran. Jazzclub Leerer Beutel. June 29. Campus International.

After OM broke up in 1982, its members continued to appear intermittently on ECM recordings, in combinations with each other and separately. Guitarist Doran, drummer Studer and bassist Burri all appeared on the album Musik für Zwei Kontrabässe, Elektrische Gitarre und Schlagzeug. Doran and Studer were also part of the power trio Red Twist and Tuned Arrow, and Studer was also in Pierre Favre's Singing Drums collective, and Rainer Brüninghaus's Continuum band with Markus Stockhausen.
