Hipgnosis is The Beatles of album cover art - nobody has ever done it better than the British design firm founded by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell. Their first cover was Pink Floyd’s 1968 album A Saucerful of Secrets and their last was Led Zeppelin’s Coda, released in 1982. There’s quite a bit of poetry in that. In their fifteen years together the firm produced many of the most iconic covers in music history. Below is a gallery of all 190 Hipgnosis covers. Hipgnosis’ Life in 15 Album Covers: Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and More. Upon release of new book ‘Vinyl. Cover Hipgnosis co-founder Aubrey "Po" Powell tells the stories behind 15 famous album covers for Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Black Sabbath and others. Imagine record sleeves without the advent of Hipgnosis, the photo-design company responsible for Pink Floyd‘s mysterious black prism, Led Zeppelin‘s flaxen-haired nudist children, AC/DC‘s censored everyday villains, Black Sabbath‘s copulating escalator robots and Peter Gabriel‘s melted grilled-cheese face.

Art: The Complete Hipgnosis Catalogue by Aubrey Powell, is out now, published by Thames & Hudson. Photograph: Hipgnosis. Hipgnosis began informally in 1968 when Pink Floyd asked their art student friends Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell to design the cover for A Saucerful of Secrets.

It was the first album cover that didn't feature the band's name or photos of its members. No more cows": Instructions were clear for the eighth studio album. Powell and Thorgerson were inspired by photo of a prism refracting light. This time, the band and the record label unanimously agreed on the design. Not only the artwork is classic; the music of the album also remains legendary. 10 iconic album covers by Hipgnosis. Pink Floyd, 'Wish You Were Here' (1975). This is not a Photoshop trick.

When it comes to rock album cover art, it's basically either BH or AH – before or after Hipgnosis. Before, LPs typically featured basic portraiture of the artists. After, bands began to embrace the surrealism of Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali – even if they had no idea that those classic artists served as creative inspirations for Hipgnosis. Founded in 1967 by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey "Po" Powell, then later expanded to include Peter Christopherson and other key contributors, Hipgnosis built upon that foundation with plenty of DIY gumption
