David Bowie is the second studio album by the English musician David Bowie, released under that title by Philips in the UK, and as Man of Words/Man of Music by Mercury in the US, on 14 November 1969. It was reissued in 1972 by RCA Records as Space Oddity (the title of the opening track, which had reached No. 5 in the UK Singles Chart). Space Oddity was the name used for CD releases of the album in 1984, 1990 and 1999, but it reverted to the original, eponymous title for 2009 and 2015 reissues.

Originally released as David Bowie in the UK and Man of Words/Man of Music in the US, David Bowie’s second album was reissued as Space Oddity in 1972. It was known under the name of its lead single – by far the most famous song on the album – on four subsequent releases, but from 2009 was released under its original name of David Bowie. Confusingly, so is Bowie’s 1967 début. Although the lead single hit in the UK, and eventually reached in 1975, the album was less successful, peaking at in the UK and in the US. Bowie was just getting started. David Bowie/Space Oddity Q&A.

This 1969 release features David Bowie's first hit single, "Space Oddity," and sets the tone for the spacey Ziggy Stardust to come. But other than the title track, Space Oddity isn't a glam-rock album. For that phase, one must move ahead to 1970's The Man Who Sold the World. These folk-based tracks largely present Bowie as a surrealist singer-songwriter. The bitter and sarcastic "Letter to Hermione" is the most impassioned track here, presenting, as it does, the angry side of this master of cool. While still earlier recordings are noted for their Anthony Newley affectations, Space Oddity is where the Bowie myth begins to take shape.

Additional information on CDs: Track 3: Deleted from the album when 'Man Of Words, Man Of Music' was re-released as 'Space Oddity' in 1972. Track 11: 1970 - B-side of 'Prettiest Star' Tracks 12 & 13: 1970 single versions. First appearance of Mick Ronson on a David Bowie record.

Space Oddity" is a play on the phrase "Space Odyssey," although the title does not appear in the lyrics. The song tells the story of Major Tom, a fictional astronaut who cuts off communication with Earth and floats into space. In a 2003 interview with Performing Songwriter magazine, Bowie explained: "In England, it was always presumed that it was written about the space landing, because it kind of came to prominence around the same time. But it actually wasn't. In 1972, the album was re-titled Space Oddity and re-issued in the US after Bowie achieved modest success in America with the singles "Changes" ( and "The Jean Genie" (.The newly released "Space Oddity" single made becoming Bowie's first US Top 40. In 1975, back in the UK, the song was once again released, this time on a single which also contained the songs "Changes" and "Velvet Goldmine.
