Tommy is a 1972 album, based on the original 1969 album by The Who, featuring the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Measham, of arrangements by Wil Malone. The project was conceived by Lou Reizner, initially with Rod Stewart singing Roger Daltrey's main role. As Pete Townshend and Daltrey became more involved, Stewart's role was reduced to singing "Pinball Wizard".

The London Symphony's ''Tommy'' sold over a million copies upon its initial release in 1972. The CD version is re-mastered and includes a 20 page illustrated libretto/booklet. Tommy's one of those works that can really hold up under change, because the songs themselves are just that good, so even if Pinball Wizard isn't quite as thrilling here, it's really cool and interesting. I wish Underture were longer here, and I could quibble with other aspects here and there, but in the long run this doesn't have to be perfect, it's just a different take on a classic album, something I can listen to with fresh ears from time to time. It's not something I'd say is a "must own," but fans of Tommy should be able to find much to enjoy.

The London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), founded in 1904, is the oldest of London's symphony orchestras. It was set up by a group of players who left Henry Wood's Queen's Hall Orchestra because of a new rule requiring players to give the orchestra their exclusive services. Style:MLA Chicago APA.
